Make lots of popcorn. I’m thinking on Tuesday when the trial is scheduled to begin, I’ll be sitting with the TV on and getting ready to enjoy the show. One thing for sure, the Senators are the jurors, and they aren’t allowed to talk the case over among themselves, so most of them probably already have decided which way they intend to vote.
If they do actually get around to calling witnesses, you can be assured of fireworks. The House impeachment managers should be fact witnesses in this whole thing, and I guess the Chief Justice will be called upon to make a decision about whether or not they can be called as witnesses. And, others need to be subpoenaed still if they are likely to testify. Lev Parnas surely wants to testify, although he wasn’t part of the initial impeachment proceeding in the House, so I don’t know how that’s going to go.
Remember, Impeachment is normally for “treason, bribery, or other high crimes and misdemeanors.” But it’s a totally partisan exercise wherein no crime has been alleged, no victim has claimed so, and it’s all based on hearsay evidence which isn’t normally even allowed in a court of law.
This is the highest sort of court of law!
So, let’s get started.
